The student representative is elected by the student membership of the SMI by secret ballot, which usually coincides with the election of the SMI Council.
The main function of the student representative is to represent the views of the SMI student membership at meetings of the SMI Council, and to work on behalf of the interests and expectations of all student members. The student representative also leads the Student Steering Committee, which is comprised of student members from institutions across Ireland.
